Five Stars
I have been blown away. I’m gone. Guys, this might be one of my favorite books of 2020! I don’t know why UNDER CURRENTS surprised me so much. Nora Roberts is the queen of romance. If you think she is coasting after publishing 1000 best sellers (approximately), you could not be more wrong. She’s still going strong, and this book is proof.
This romantic suspense masterclass is broken into four parts. Y’all, BRACE for part one. It’s brutal. But also nuanced, interesting, and will have you hanging off the edge of your seat to find out what happens. Ms. Roberts neatly wrapped up my emotions and held them in the palm of her hand for the duration.
Part one is all about the hero’s back story, with part two we meet the heroine and, oh my gosh, I love her. I don’t think I’ve ever read a heroine quite like Darby. If competence-porn is your thing, you’re going to love her as much as I do. Darby is a landscape artist who moves to the small North Carolina town looking for a place to put roots and start her business. She’s a no BS, no-frills, take-me-or-leave-me heroine and I want to be more like her in my everyday life.
Part two might throw people for a loop because Nora pivots beautifully from one of the most intense romantic suspense novels I’ve ever read to a wonderfully idyllic small-town romance without skipping a beat. I was in awe. Yet throughout the whole book, there are undercurrents (get it??). The reader knows something big is going to happen and has to hold on and keep reading.
The romance? It’s amazing. Low angst. Adorable. It’s one of the most realistic portrayals of two people deepening their connection and relationship slowly and naturally. Darby and Zane just click. Lots of outside forces to keep things interesting.
Overall, I have nothing negative to say about this book. I want to reread it right now! I miss Zane, Darby and the little town they live in. Can I start a petition for Nora to turn this book into a series? I never want to leave!
