Review: Beautiful Sinner by Sophie Jordan

Three Stars

Let me start off by saying, the premise of Beautiful Sinner by Sophie Jordan is my dream plot. Formerly chubby teen, Gabriella, comes back to her hometown and connects with recently exonerated Cruz, a bad boy with a heart of gold. The books in this series have all been hit or miss for me, but this one was somewhere in the middle.

What I enjoyed about this book: Cruz Walsh and his sisters. I’ve loved them since they were introduced into the series and I love them now. The sex scenes in this book are incendiary. There aren’t too many of them, but man, they’re well written and hot. I truly felt the chemistry between Gabriel and Cruz.

The parts that were difficult for me: There was a lot of time and effort put into introducing multiple conflicts for Gabriel and Cruz to overcome, family dynamics, former boyfriend as a boss, the high school bully, feelings of self-worth, and they’re all resolved in a single chapter, almost simultaneously.

The timing of this book was way off. I felt like I had just started learning more about Gabriel and Cruz and then abruptly, the book was over. As I mentioned, I loved this premise, I wanted to really see Gabriel and Cruz overcome their hurdles both individually and together. Unfortunately, I just didn’t get the depth I wanted and needed. This novel is fun, but everything between Gabriel and Cruz stays pretty surface level. They have very few in-depth conversations, and I think this book actually takes place over only a few days.

Overall, I recommend this book if you’re looking for something easy and hot. It’s a really quick read. Honestly, I felt like I blinked and I was at 40%. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I just needed more.
